During World War II, candy bar king Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall), creator of the Harvey Bar, hires washed-up ex-ballplayer Jimmy Dugan (Sam McMurray) to manage the Rockford Peaches, an Illinois team in the first All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) – formed since baseball’s biggest male stars have gone off to war.
The Peaches comprise Evelyn Gardner (Tracy Nelson), jersey #15 who plays right field; former Miss Georgia Betty Horn (Tracy Reiner), the catcher who wears jersey #1; Dottie Hinson (Carey Lowell), jersey #8 who is on first base; Kit Keller (Christine Elise), the pitcher who wears jersey 23; Mae Mordabito (Wendy Makkena), who plays centerfield in jersey 15; and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh), a powerful hitter who plays second base and wears jersey 32.
The Suds Bucket is the local watering hole, and Benny the Chimp (whom Jimmy won in a poker game) is the team’s mascot.
The series was based on the 1992 feature film of the same title starring Tom Hanks and Madonna. Megan Cavanagh and Tracy Reiner reprised their roles from the film.
