This Friday-night BBC serialisation of Charles Dickens’ much-loved novel – one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by the Drama Department at the time – featured the television debut of 15-year-old Leonard Cracknell as the young David Copperfield. Robert Hardy played the older Copperfield from episode five.

Edna Morris co-starred as Peggotty.

The production had 70 speaking parts, and the settings were designed based on the original Phiz illustrations.

Location shooting took place in and around Blunderstone, Suffolk, where Dickens wrote that David was born, and on the seashore near Yarmouth, where the Peggotty home in a boat was originally situated.
